Analyze Position

The core of Chess Move Chooser. Set up any position and get instant recommendations from the Stockfish engine.

• Setting the Board: Drag and drop pieces from the margins onto the board to recreate your scenario. Alternatively, paste a FEN string directly into the text box at the bottom.
• Position Rules: Use the toggles to specify whose turn it is, whether White or Black has castling rights, and if there is an active En Passant target square.
• Target ELO: Don't want a Grandmaster move? You can scale the engine's strength. Choose from ELO 800 (Beginner) all the way up to ELO 3200 (Full Engine) to see how players of different levels might approach the position.

Scan a Screenshot

Turn images into playable boards instantly using our local AI vision model.

• How to Use: Take a screenshot of a 2D digital chess game (from Chess.com, Lichess, or a PDF book diagram). Drag, drop, or paste (Ctrl/Cmd+V) the image into the scanner.
• Privacy: The image is processed entirely on your device. It is never uploaded to the internet.
• Editing: Once the scanner detects the pieces, you can manually drag pieces to correct any minor errors before importing it into the Analyzer.

Sequence Trainer

An interactive way to study specific lines, openings, or game fragments move-by-move.

• Loading a Sequence: Enter a starting position (FEN) and paste your move sequence using standard algebraic notation (SAN) or PGN.
• Playback: Use the on-screen arrows or your keyboard's left and right arrow keys to step through the line. Click Auto Play to watch the sequence unfold automatically.
• Deep Dive: Pause at any move and click Analyze with Stockfish to instantly evaluate the position.
• Sharing: Click the Share button to generate a unique link to send the specific sequence to friends or students.

Puzzle Trainer

Sharpen your tactical vision with rated puzzles drawn from the Lichess database.

• How it Works: You are dropped into a real game where a forced tactic exists. Make your move; the opponent will auto-reply.
• Rating System: Solve it correctly to increase your Puzzle Rating. If you get it wrong after a second try, your rating will slightly decrease (calculated using Elo win-probability math).
• Offline Capability: A curated set of puzzles is bundled directly with the site. Once the page loads, you can solve puzzles completely offline.

Elo Rating Calculator

Predict exactly how a game's outcome will impact your rating.

• How to Use: Enter your rating and your opponent's rating. Select the game result (Win, Draw, Loss).
• K-Factor Selection: Choose the K-Factor that matches your federation or platform (e.g., 32 for most online platforms, 40 for new FIDE players, 20 for established players). The calculator will instantly output your expected score and your exact rating change.

Import Lichess Games

Seamlessly pull your recent games directly from Lichess into the Move Chooser for deep engine analysis and mistake-checking.

Chess Move Chooser includes a full library for players looking to study the theory of the game.

• Rules Guide: A comprehensive breakdown of everything from basic piece movement to complex rules like En Passant, Castling, Underpromotion, and Draw rules (stalemate, 50-move rule).
• Openings Database: Learn the ideas behind standard setups like the Caro-Kann, Sicilian Defense, Queen's Gambit, and niche systems like The Cow Opening.
• Tactical Scenarios: Study classic mating nets (like the Smothered Mate) and common opening traps so you never fall for them in a real game.

4. Customizing Your Experience

• Appearance: Change the look of your board at any time. Choose from visual themes including Traditional Brown, Forest Green, Ocean Blue, Midnight Slate, and Royal Purple.
• Resetting Data: Because your Puzzle Trainer rating and streaks are saved in your browser's local storage, you can start completely fresh at any time by clearing your browser data.
